Hawkins Futura Nonstick Dosa Tawa, 33 cm

Hawkins Futura Non-stick Dosa Tawa, 33cm

The Hawkins Futura Nonstick Anodized Tawa is the heaviest nonstick Tawas we tested. It is 4.8mm thick, and the 28-inch variant weighs 1.05kg. Most other options are only 2.5 mm thick.

Heavier tawas are better because they retain heat, resulting in darker brown and crispier Dosas. The thicker base also means it heats up more slowly. It takes about 3 minutes at high temperatures to get through 260 degrees Celsius, while the 2.5mm nonstick Prestige and Pigeon Tawas take only 1 minute 40 seconds. So with Hawkins, you don’t have to worry about the pan getting too hot.

The design is smart, and the handle is designed for ease of use. Tawa has a slightly concave shape. Hawkins uses a German-made nonstick coating on a hard anodized base. So even if the coating comes off, you don’t have to worry about aluminum seeping into your food.

Pigeon Flat Tawa 280 (Aluminum, Nonstick) 27 cm

Pigeon by Stovekraft Non-Stick Forged Flat Tawa 280 (Aluminium, Non-stick) 27 cm

Pigeon is one of the cheapest Dosa Tawas available in the market. Like most other nonstick cookware, it has a Teflon coating on the aluminum base. Build quality is average. The pan has a glossy finish, and the handle is ergonomically designed for finger grip. However, the Tawa we bought had a scratch on the cooking surface.

We bought the 27 cm variant, and it weighs only 585 g. The positive side of the lightweight is that it is very easy to handle. But on the other hand, the pan quickly loses its durability. In about a year, the pan can warp. Another downside is that it can overheat instantly. In our tests, we found that at high temperatures, the pan reaches 260°C (500°F) in just 1.4 minutes, which is the temperature at which PTFE begins to decompose to release waste.
